Handheld Ultrasound Education Course
A free, self-paced online course that takes a healthcare professional from first scan to core point-of-care applications on a handheld ultrasound device. It has 12 modules (about 15 to 17 hours in total) and follows the application list in the ACEP emergency ultrasound guidelines and the structure suggested by the IFEM POCUS Curriculum Guidelines.
Who it is for
Licensed clinicians new to ultrasound, including physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses and paramedics. Students and interested members of the public are welcome too. No prior scanning experience is needed. Learners without clinical training should expect extra anatomy reading.
What each module includes
- Learning objectives
- A written lesson, brand-neutral
- Assigned free resources from outside sources, linked and never copied
- A quiz
- A hands-on practice task
Scope and safety
Completing this course builds knowledge and early skill. It does not confer competency, credentialing or privileges, which require supervised scans and local sign-off. Only licensed health professionals may use ultrasound to diagnose or guide care. Other learners should not scan themselves or others for diagnosis.
Certificate
Completing the course with a passing score on the final exam, and uploading one saved clip from each core module, earns a certificate of completion. The certificate records that you completed the online curriculum. It is not a credential, a competency assessment or a license.
